Paid Parental Leave Amendments
The Federal Government has amended the Paid Parental Leave Act and from 1 January 2013, fathers may be entitled to paid parental leave.
The entitlement applies to ‘eligible supporting partners’ when then they have a child or adopt a child and is funded by the government.
Fathers can get up to 2 weeks of pay to take time off work to care for a newborn or newly adopted child.
The legislation will apply for children born or adopted on or after 1 January 2013.
The definition of ‘eligible supporting partners’ includes adopting parents and same-sex couples.
Employees can make an application for the new Dad and Partner Pay from 1 October this year.
Fathers make a similar application to working mothers for paid parental leave.
